Allegheny has continuously done a poor job protecting POC and it’s black students on campus. The racial bias reports are usually never heard or the student is told “okay I’m sorry” instead of the accused receiving any type of repercussion. The school continuously ignores its own statements in regards of hiring faculty of color. They prove time and time again they are there to make it seem like they support students of color but the only support students of color on Allegheny’s campus have is each other. Don’t even get me started on their mistreatment of low income students and how they handle disabled students and students with mental health issues. If you’re black with a disability and you’re low income, well good luck Charlie.

I graduated in 1993 and was involved in a racist incident that was the impetus behind the creation of Allegheny’s Racial Harassment Policy. The previously mentioned incident also led to a campus wide Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Yet, Allegheny still has plenty of room for more improvement when it comes to advancing blackness at Allegheny: more black staff, more black events, more black alumni spotlights. etc. I also have a self-serving request- making my book, The Least Likely...from the Housing Projects to the Courthouse- available/required reading for all students. Instead of other non-alumni.

I attended Allegheny for 4 1/2 years. The college administration did nothing but pander to the Allegheny Community during every controversial incident that occurred during my schooling. I'm not surprised they lack conviction here either. Don't count on legacy admissions from future family or alumni donations from me.

I am willing to participate in this dialogue, but as a participant. This must be a community dialogue, with particular emphasis of elevate Black voices and the voices of marginalized POC.
All lives cannot matter until Black Lives Matter.
