Reading Partners has been an incredible addition to my life. Working with my students every week has taught me so much about what kids face in school and at home. I have been a Reading Partners volunteer since September. I cannot imagine the 2nd grader I work with could get the kind of indivdiual support he needs without this program. Interventions like Reading Partners are critical if we really want to meet the goal of having all children on track to "read to learn" at the end of 3rd grade.

As a Reading Partners volunteer and professional educator, I wholeheartedly support the Reading Partners curriculum. While the empirical evidence for the organization speaks for itself, anecdotally it has been a joy to watch my student grow in vocabulary and reading confidence. In absence of measures to promote literacy through a systematic overhaul of our public education system, programs like Reading Partners are essential to see our young people’s future maximized through the growth and development of our most fundamental skill: reading.

I joined Reading Partners in November and it is one of the best things I have ever done! My student is so eager to please and do well. This volunteer opportunity, more like a privelege, has enriched my life so much. I look forward to many more years as a volunteer for this program. There is no doubt that this program which provides one on one interaction with a struggling student helps them progress to the level they need to be at.

The Reading Partners program provides excellent curriculum that's friendly to volunteers and students, and is highly effective in improving reading skills in young readers. I've had the opportunity to tutor three students and have enjoyed seeing their growth in reading comprehension, fluidity and confidence. These kids are our state's future. Their ability to read and communicate effectively is not only important to their future, but ours as well!

I really love the Reading Partners program. I taught in the elementary for 27 years and have recently retired. I really like the way the program is set up with the outline of what the lesson will be for that particular student. As a tutor I don't have to plan the lesson. It's wonderful. The student I have been working with had a hearing impairment last year and has had surgery to correct that. So he was definitely behind in his reading. But after working with him using the Reading Partners program and curriculum, he has progressed in work analysis and comprehension, and has gained confidence. I feel very positive about the progress the student has made.

This is my second year to be a reading buddy through Reading Partners. My first year was with a third grade boy who was barely reading at a first grade level. While he did show some improvement, he did not pass the third grade standardizing reading test. I am so passionate that we need to not wait till third grade to start helping students become stronger readers. This year I work with a first grade girl and she has shown great strides! Our site coordinator has said she will graduate out of the program because of her progress. How wonderful it would be if every student who needed a reading buddy could have one through Reading Partner!

Reading has made my life so much more complete. I love to sit down and read. I have assigned up to be a Reading Partner at Eugene Field Elementary School. It gives me a lot of satisfaction to know that I am able to help a child learn to read.
