Come on Oklahoma, if California can do it so can Oklahoma. I've been 911 dispatcher for 30 years and the reclassification genuinely meant something to me, it was much better than receiving a plaque and handshake.

Oklahoma dispatchers/911 operators are highly trained to answer quickly, obtain pertinent information, determine who to send, guide in medical assistance on the phone, give comforting words to those in distress while waiting for police fire and /or ambulance, decipher information from the hysterical, injured or intoxicated, relay information to officers, while dispatching multiple responders and keeping track of where each of them are, often all these things are done all at once. We are the first first responders.

Dispatchers are the first first responders. Not to disparage secretaries but that description doesn’t BEGIN to cover their duties. Y’all need to do a shift with them and see how essential we are.

I AM A 911 DISPATCHER, not a secretary. My hours are not 9-5 Monday through Friday, with holiday and weekends off. I hear way more than any secretary would want to here. 911 are the first link to an officer, fireman or paramedic.

This profession is grossly overlooked. It is not a secretarial job that works Monday through Friday or 9 to 5. It is a unique field that has the same demands and takes it toll on the individuals that work this profession, just as any of the other first responders, some times more so, because they don’t have the same protections as classified first responders. It is time to recognize this profession and the individuals that are brave enough to make it a career.
