I am writing to you in order formally express my concern over a recent change to the practices of OHIP. As of May 19, 2009, OHIP has suspended approval for out of country (OOC) applications for the Duodenal Switch (DS) bariatric surgery. This change in policy is a direct result of a recommendation by the Ontario Bariatric Network Advisory Board (OBNAB).The reasons cited by the OBNAB for non-recommendation of DS are: 1) high complication rate 2) difficulty of repatriation 3) high morbidity/morality 4) long term requirements for intense follow up. While I agree that these are legitimate reasons for moratorium on a medical procedure, however; I would argue that the OHIP policies, utilized in assessing DS surgery applications, systemically skew the statistics.
