Northwest Ohio Democracy In Action* joins concerned citizens of the Defiance Area to request of the 5th District Candidates – Micheal Galbraith and Bob Latta – that they welcome a “Candidates Issues & Answers Forum,” which is to be scheduled the last week of October on a day/time of the candidates’ convenience and at a neutral site in Defiance.

(*NOTE: Northwest Ohio Democracy In Action is a non-partisan group of concerned citizens of the Defiance Area, independent of and unaffiliated with either candidate’s campaign.)

Updates

October 2, 2018

The request for a public forum has been formally delivered to the offices of both candidates. We are currently awaiting their response regarding potential availability for a neutral debate in Defiance. Transparency remains our primary objective as we seek to facilitate this direct dialogue for the constituents of our district.

October 2, 2018

The level of interest in this forum proposal has surpassed my initial expectations. This surge in public attention demonstrates that our community desires a direct and transparent exchange with our congressional candidates.

As citizens of Northwest Ohio, we insist on an open forum dis ussion with our representative. Public comments in text and calls are being ignored. Please demonstrate a modicum of concern for the will of your constituents by a town hall meeting. We can do the leg- work of setting up the room and refreshments. Direct discourse is greatly needed.

What's the matter, Bob? Are you afraid of coming face to face with your constituents, of answering our questions on your positions? You owe it to us to show up! It's part of your job, after all. I am highly dissatisfied with your screened question and canned response telephone townhalls.

Bob Latta works for the people of OH-5. We pay his current salary and will pay his lifetime pension. He has an obligation to physically meet and communicate with his constituents in an open forum. Any public servant who refuses to ever appear in a public forum, to discuss important issues, does not deserve to remain in office.

Interesting note; Bob Latta and his father before that have been my representative for probably 30 years. I met his father many years after he retired. Micheal Galbraith is taking his first run at this seat and I've met him a dozen times! What does that say about willingness to hear my thoughts? Bob, please show up!

I would welcome an opportunity to hear our current representative speak. I have had several opportunities to meet and learn his Democratic challenger, Michael Galbraith’s views, but in the 11 years Mr. Latta has been our representative, including at the 2018 Wood County Fair, I cannot recall an opportunity to hear him speak. (Mr. Latta was scheduled to introduce the Jr. Fair royalty and the parade, but instead hid in the back of the Pork-a-lean stand.

I just want to ask both candidates to define public servitude in their own words and explain to me what role they think special interest campaign money plays in the process of public servitude.
