I’ve been in theater all of my life and am going into the field of Student Affairs. To change housing policies on students and not grandfather the current cohorts into the previous policies is irresponsible of the current administration at the University of Hartford. As higher education continues to become more expensive, financial choices are making decisions for students. Although on campus living communities are shown to help students succeed, for this type of program there has been little consideration as to how different their experience is and why they choose to come to Hartford. I encourage the administration to consider allowing the current admitted cohort to have an exception from the new policies, and reconsider them in the future for this specific specialized program.

For students like those in the theatre program, who take the bulk of their courses off the main campus, this simply isn’t feasible or financially reasonable.

Students should have been notified of the change before enrolling at Hartt. This policy being initiated after enrollment is not faiir to the students of Hartt.

I graduated back in 1995 and had it not been for the housing I had on Oxford Street, I would not have been able to afford to come to Hartt. My share of rent and utilities came out to $200 a month all inclusive... Forcing someone to live on campus serves no purpose to the students and may not be the best choice for some students. Please reconsider...

A unique university program requires unique and appropriate living and nutrition programs as clearly outlined by our granddaughter. We fully support this effort and encourage the university to carefully consider this proposal. Thank you.

It is important for students in the theater division to have access to off campus housing. I believe this to be true for many reasons. One of the most important being that the shuttle provided to and from the HPAC is unreliable and since we all had very late night rehearsals, it was impossible to find parking on campus late at night that wasn’t super far away from where we lived. It made me feel unsafe to walk that far away alone at night.

We are parents of a Hartt student. The Hartt School, while part of the university, is a distinct community and should be recognized as so. Being in university housing would limit a student’s ability to practice. A ten-minute walk late at night to practice rooms is hardly conducive to belting out Broadway tunes or arias.
Please reconsider your housing restrictions.

After being placed in a toxic triple dorm my freshman year, I moved off campus. If I had not been allowed to do that, there is a good chance I would have left the school.

This new policy was not in place at the time that all current first year students committed to the University of Hartford, and therefore all current first year students should be exempt. Enforcing this change at this point for this group of students is ethnically wrong, unfair, and demonstrates poor business practices.

I am an alumni and I lived off campus 3/4 years and saved thousands of dollars doing so! My student loans would have been much larger if I had been forced to live on campus for another year.

My concerns are for the health and well being of the students and think the petition address a lot of important issues. Lastly, my grauate school changed rules well I was in college costing me extra money and I have never donated back because of it. I only donate to my undergrad. Happy students will be a beacon for school moving forward and donate to the success of the college.
