These students should've been notified of this change prior to their first year, they should be allowed to live off campus where it seems they'll be best equipped to succeed.

Hartt Class of 2010. I was in a bad housing situation freshman year and moving off campus was the best solution and ended up being more cost-effective.

I stand behind this petition 100%. I am a proud BFA music theatre 2011 graduate. Had I been forced to live on campus for more than my freshman year, I would not have been able to afford to return my sophomore year. I could not afford the housing and meal plans, and because of a (laughable) $5,000 “talent based scholarship” from my initial audition, I was ineligible for any other scholarships from the school to go towards my education. Training, theatre, art, education, knowledge, and housing are not for the rich. Give students the opportunity to find cheaper, more convenient housing off the main campus so they can live closer to where they actually spend most of their days, and can continue their path towards graduation. The University already scrapes as much from students as possible. This is unacceptable.

Theatre majors at Hartt spend most of their time at the HPAC and not on campus. Only the first year should be mandatory to live on campus but not two years.

As someone who went to this school and lived in the dorms ONE year, I can’t even IMAGINE 2 years. I was a theatre student and with most of my classes at the HPAC I had to commute to most classes and waiting for the shuttles was a nightmare and there was no option to walk as the neighborhoods nearby were unsafe.

The option to live off campus, and my decision to do so, was single-handedly the best part of my college experience. I’ve learned how to budget both my time and money and learned real life skills that I will take with me after college. Campus life is not for everybody, and it is certainly significantly less convenient for Theatre and Dance students at Hartt.

When on campus housing is 12,000$ and mediocre at best you cannot force anyone to stay. Either change the rule back to the way it was or offer more financial aid.

We are parents of a MT freshman. We fully support everything that is stated in this petition. There are so many benefits and reasons for The Hartt School class of 2022 to live off-campus sophomore year. We cannot think of one benefit to them remaining on campus. You don’t even offer academic scholarships to the musical theater students so they should not have to follow the same rules as the students of the University of Hartford. Please reconsider your decision. Thank you

I understand that the university has implemented this rule because of its own need for increased revenue but to do so on the backs of the students is irresponsible. The university should instead research why it is not able to provide room and board at a more affordable rate.

It is unreasonable to expect students to attend classes at one campus and to live at another campus. Performing Arts is not a "one size fits all" discipline. Please respect their needs.

As the parent of a MT freshman, I have been very concerned about our daughter safety walking home late on campus, or having to wait long hours for the shuttle from HPAC. The cost of Uber adds to the already hefty bill we pay to have her at a school with the high caliber of MT studies at Hartt. The dietary requirements of a theater student not being met at the Commons is another concern. Please let the class of 2022 live off campus is they so choose!

Living off campus sophomore year was one of my fondest memories! Campus was not that awesome. Very secluded.
