Several years ago, the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP) began to add Law Enforcement K9's who died in the Line of Duty. This petition is to start the process to request that the ODMP also include Law Enforcement Horses that lose their lives in the Line of Duty. The relationship an Officer has with his or her K9 partner is remarkable, however, there is a similar bond between Mounted Officers and their equine partners. As herd animals, horses can form bonds to their assigned riders. These horses rely on their Officer partners to get them safely through their assigned shifts. The Officers in turn, rely on their equine partners to get them safely through as well.

When a Law Enforcement horse is killed or dies in the Line of Duty, the loss is tremendous. Thankfully, losing mounted horses in this fashion does not happen too often. If the ODMP does approve this addition, the qualifying causes of death will be similar to the criteria for K9's.

Using horses for Law Enforcement is an important and popular part of policing across our nation. Their contributions are vast, Inclusion will also raise awareness amongst the public and Law Enforcement agencies regarding the vital role that horses perform in protecting public order.
