Social media shall never tell any story with ignorance of the truth. You have the capability to direct readers closer to the reality doesn’t mean you could manipulate them. In this case, if you don’t care your words would mislead people’s view to biodiversity, I doubt you would feel empathy of other human.

This is pure negligence! Only a few years back after a false news article a guy took a machine gun and gunned down a whole cave roost of completely harmless rare Egyptian fruit bats. Junk news has real world consequences! Take responsibility and remove the false article and replace it with truthful and responsible news.

Bats are a critical part of our ecosystems, and make essential contributions to our food supply, to controlling disease-bearing insects, and benefit us in many other ways. Printing folk tales to scare people into thinking these beneficial animals are to be feared and despised is beneath the journalistic standards you claim to represent.

Bats are beautiful and integral to our ecosystem. Fact checking is also beautiful. Fact: Foxes, coyotes, raccoons, and skunks, etc. can also carry rabies. Fact: Dogs contribute nearly 99% of all rabies transmissions to humans. Fact: When average populations of bats are randomly sampled, less than 0.5% of bats test positive for rabies.

As a bat conservationist I am VERY disappointed with the NY Times. Here in Asia stray dogs are a much more serious rabies threat than bats ever could be. Stop villifying bats!!!
