Bats face enough threats without human persecution. Spreading invalid and untrue information illegitimatises science and disregards the time and work going into actual scientific research.

Bats are very beneficial and harmless creatures. They get a bad enough rap without articles like the one published in your paper.

If the article said "bats, not dogs, are the biggest source of rabies in the USA" then it would be correct according to the statistics. The rest of the world is not the same (US has a mass campaign to clean up rabies in domestic dogs). The title of their article should emphasize things like that. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31194721

Jesus, what is wrong with you people? How on earth did that get the ok to publish. Did you lose your fact checkers in a budget cut?

Please don't use alarmist headlines for publicity purposes. If bats are a problem, show it in a sober way.

This is really sad. They probably don't even know that where I live (the US Virgin Islands) bats do NOT carry rabies, period. I hope that the NYT (which I subscribe to) will present not only an educated retraction but will in future ensure that verifiable facts are presented.

Bats are amazing. NYT, please do not add to the already large pool of misinformation and myth regarding bats!
