At least100 million sharks are killed every year, almost entirely because of the shark finning industry just to make soup for weddings and birthday parties. In another ten years, scientists estimate that there will literally be no sharks left in the world's oceans. The majority of this trade is in Asia--yet there are thousands of restaurants across the U.S. that serve shark fin soup and contribute to decline of sharks leading to extinction.

Sharks are key predators at the top of the food chain-- as their numbers decline, the balance of marine life changes drastically. This will disastrous and will impact life throughout the oceans. I'm asking you to stand up and simply say no to the genocide.

You can help make a difference just by adding your voice. This petition will addyour university's support to the efforts to stop serving shark fin soup in the United States. We ask to go beyond banning shark finning, and to go straight to the source and ban all shark fin trade in the U.S. The conservation effort must become stronger to save our sharks worldwide, so let's demand from Congress that shark fin soup be gone forever.
