This petition is to express our dissatisfaction with the layout of the Academic Year, especially with regard to the policy of essay deadlines being set for the end of Week 12. It is futile having a study week when most assessments have to be completedbeforeit occurs. In many subjects throughout the university, students have more assessments/essays due in Week 12 than exams to sit after study week. The aim of this petition is to demonstrate to University Management the amount of support that exists amongst students (and teaching staff) for the reinstatement of essay deadlines after study week as was best practice up to this Academic Year.

Updates

March 27, 2014

The feedback from our teaching staff has been eye-opening. Many agree that this current schedule is counterproductive for everyone involved.

March 27, 2014

The momentum is undeniable now. University management has to take notice of this shift.

It's very stressful to have so many exams/essays in week 12 when we also have to attend lectures and then to have study week the following week when most of the work is done/handed in. Very unhappy about the layout if I'm being perfectly honest. It's not fair on final years, it's our degree after all and we already have enough pressure/stress without this. It's unacceptable !!

It's ridiculous. Not only do I have 2 exams in Week 12, but I also have to hand two essays (2500 and 3000 words respectively).

I'm tired of getting my fifth English essay submitted two days before my first exam...how are students expected to be prepared for exams with so many essays due the week before. Ridiculous.

1 exam in week 12 ( no study time) , 5 essays to submit before 14th. Only 2 exams in the exam period, one if those on the second day of exams. Only 1 exam left after Easter- compromising the quality of work submitted and causing unnecessary pressure. Essays in place if exams should be classed as exams.

Final year Arts student studying Soc and Pol and Geography. Soc and Pol exams the 15th and 16th of April with a thesis for Geography Due a week later on the 24th. Extremely unhappy and feel its unfair to a final year student to have exams in the middle of a thesis considering there is ample time for exams after thesis due. Also the Library is closed for two days in the middle this hectic time.

'Academic simplification' puts students' concerns second and undermines the entire purpose of the university - quality education.
