Service levels are at an all time low at the IRS. I am an Enrolled Agent and have not been able to get a live person from the Tax PREPARERS hotline number in over 4 weeks.

I think having the same representative working on a case is a policy long overdue to be put in place. It would make the process of resolving an issue 1000 times much easier.

The way things are at the IRS right now, it makes we want to find a whole other line of work. The current level of funding for the IRS is grossly inadequate and to cut it any further is unthinkable. Doesn't anybody in Congress get it? Every dollar spent on the IRS pays for itself many times over and pays their salaries and for their staffs too.

It took me 2-1/2 years to get the IRS to correct its own messes on one client. I invested hundreds of hours and a dozen visits to the local office in order to get IRS to fix its one error that then morphed in numerous issues. I feel sorry for the IRS agents who are denied needed resources by the truly ignorant disciples of Grover Norquist running amok on Capitol Hill.

It does not make sense to cut off the arm of the government that collects the funds to run the government!

My belief is that the IRS be adequately funded to do its job; however, if Congress insists on budget cuts, it should specify in no uncertain terms that the IRS shall maintain staffing in the so-called "customer service" function at adequate levels such that a live knowledgeable agent answers the phone within 20 minutes during tax season at any time during the year. The IRS could then prioritize its remaining budget on enforcement and collection activities.
Also, the Taxpayer Bill of Rights should be amended to state the IRS may not make a deadline for responding to an audit letter less than four weeks from the date that the letter was deposited in the mail. 1-2 week deadlines for letter and in-person audit is inadequate time for a taxpayer or their representative to prepare for the audit at any time during the year, much less during tax season and, accordingly, is a breach of due process guaranteed by our Constitution.

I experienced these inefficiencies directly when contacting the IRS Practitioner line, it is unacceptable and a true travesty for a country like the United States.

These reforms are what we all talk about but they don't seem to get much attention -- the burdens added for the practitioners will only continue to grow. The level of detail required to complete a tax return and the limited time available make for a bad outcome for all.

With so many comments coming forth concerning the inability to collect taxes from all who owe, it is rather foolish to cut the budget for the policing effort. The American taxpayers and tax preparers have a right to receive the correct answer from a competent employee in the IRS in a timely manner. If Congress expects the monies to arrive to pay all the bills they rack up, the collecting agency needs proper funding to provide the best service to the people.

For an agency that ruthlessly shows no mercy on their end they sure ask a lot from the other end in the Form of patience, tolerance and forgiveness for the many shortcomings of this agency.
