As a Muslim member of the University community, I am very touched and inspired by the compassion and solidarity this petition demonstrates. I'm glad to be a part of it.

Those of us who opposed these high-rise student residences could see this coming from the start. The ICT has become a sitting duck for harassment from the surrounding buildings by a racist subset of tenants.

Residents recently reported a visitor who tossed a bottle off the building and he was arrested. That was good but the students said they did it so they didn't get blamed themselves. I think the answer we were hoping for was they did it because what he did was wrong and dangerous. We still have a very long way to go.

19th century Tucson was a "progressive" frontier town – meaning a place where people of different races were welcomed. Our culture claims Tohono O'odham (and more generally Native American), Mexican, European, Middle Eastern, Chinese and African roots. Today, the Islamic Center of Tucson continues this tradition by serving as a beacon for newcomers—many of whom are refugees fleeing wars' ravages. It is deserving of our support and respect. Behemoth student housing that over-dominates the landscape and invites vandalism—through the promotion of a culture of wantoness—undermines our community sense of being. That ICT would be subjected to such vandalism is an embarrassment and out of step with who we are.

I am a 1966 grad of the U of A and I find the behavior of this handful of students appalling. Bigotry and xenophobia should not be tolerated and should be dealt with promptly. Eviction is absolutely necessary, and if possible, the University should expel students participating in such acts. The Islamic Center has a long history in this community and deserves our respect and support.
