Kennecott Minerals has submitted a mining permit application under Michigan\'s as yet untested sulfide mining law, for the development of the first recognized sulfide metallic mine in the history of the State of Michigan. This mining application proposes to develop a massive sulfide mine UNDER one of Michigan\'s most important trout streams-the Salmon Trout River;and on the Yellow Dog Plains which is known for its beauty, wild streams, and extraordinary wildlife. Because we feel this application is fundamentally deficient in meeting the protection criteria of Michigan\'s Non-Ferrous Metallic Mining Statute and rules, established to protect our state and waters from the acknowledged risks of sulfide mining; because these risks are too great to this region dependent on a thriving economy based on tourism and recreation; and because the people of Michigan are not willing to allow the degradation of the Upper Peninsula, Lake Superior and U.P. communities-WE URGE THE STATE OF MICHIGAN TO DENY THIS PERMIT.
I was looking at the maps again today and the proximity to the Salmon Trout River is just terrifying because once that water is poisoned there is no hitting a rewind button on the damage. People have been sending me the most heartbreaking notes about how the plains are their only escape from the noise of the city and I honestly think that is exactly why this whole thing feels so personal for all of us.

I just saw we hit one hundred signatures and my coffee is currently cold because I have been staring at the screen in total shock. It is just so wild that this many people care about the Salmon Trout River deep down like I do and I never thought this would move so fast when I started typing it out on my couch.

I will be in a position to relocate in a couple of years. I was thinking about the UP. If it is environmentally at risk I would have to reconsider my choice. I couldn't invest everything to have it all lost to toxic waste.

Keep our water clean. The UP is one of the last wild places left and we cant let mining companies ruin it for a quick buck.

NO WAY. Sulfide mining is a disaster waiting to happen. Once the water is poisoned you cant get it back.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. Leave the Yellow Dog Plains alone. We need to protect the land for future generations.
