With the recent vote approving Option E middle school redistricting plan, we feel that the board has made a hasty and wrong choice for the feeder pattern for the Fairfield middle schools. There are many outstanding issues in regards to the new plan that are in need of further study. We ask that the board reconsider its vote for Option E and open the decision to further study. And for those members who have voted against the Option E, thank you for your correct vote and we look forward to your leadership on addressing this critical issue to our school children and community.

These are the following outstanding issues with regards to the new feeder pattern:

Impact on budget - while the number of buses may be a wash, there will definitely be an impact on the cost of gas and wear and tear. We want to know how much more this will cost. Any additional cost for buses will have to come out of the education budget - what educational elements will need to be cut? Teachers? Teaching materials?

Impact on education and academic performance - we would like a study or analysis done on the impact of long bus rides on student's academic performance. There is a lot of data that shows that exercise improves academic performance (see recent NY Times article: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/09/15/phys-ed-can-exercise-make-kids-smarter/?emc=eta1) Are we going to be negatively impacting our children's ability to learn?

Impact on traffic - We are hearing from a number of parents that they are going to drive their kids to school as they don't want them spending so much time on a bus. So, if the impact of buses criss-crossing town isn't enough, then we need to understand the impact of additional cars driving to and from school. We would like a traffic impact study done.

Grandfathering - we want the BOE to appropriately solve the grandfathering issue before they take a vote as it is an integral part of the decision.

High School Overcrowding - we want to know how they are going to solve the overcrowding at the High School level. This is a critical piece of the puzzle and cannot be treated as a separate issue.

One hundred people have signed on to fight this disastrous redistricting plan. The school board ignored our concerns, but they cannot ignore us when we demand they answer for the damage they are doing to our children.

The school board thinks they can just force Option E down our throats and wait for us to go away. We are currently digging into their budget projections to prove exactly how much they are willing to strip from our classrooms to pay for these ridiculous bus routes.

The school board is ignoring us because they think this will blow over. We push this total past 500 signatures today so they cannot pretend we are not watching their disastrous plan.

This plan is a mess. Why are we rushing into this without looking at the busing costs? My kids already have enough homework without adding an hour of travel time.

Absolutely not. This is going to hurt everyone. Reconsider the vote immediately.

Seriously? Long bus rides are terrible for their mental health and grades. Stop focusing on the map and start focusing on the actual students!

Fix this now!! My daughter shouldnt have to be on a bus for an hour when she could be at a school right down the street. Total fail.

Ridiculous decision. The board needs to listen to the parents and slow down. Option E makes zero sense for our neighborhood.

What about the teachers? If money is being wasted on extra fuel and maintenance then our classrooms are going to suffer. Think about the kids for once.
