Anyone who has attended Bryn Mawr Elementary already has the experience of a disconnect. While the school name was changed to honor a scholar, the students at the school cannot draw a straight line, cannot connect the dots, to easily understand the legacy and accomplishment from themselves to The First Lady of the United States, graduate, Michelle Robinson Obama. Now we face a name change of the school to honor the amazing Rev. Willie Barrow. Loved and accomplished, we believe Drexel Boulevard or Stony Island where she worked and attended church, might be better. Place Matters: South Shore is a unique community. It is the last where African Americans still live on Lake Michigan. It is where civil rights leaders and cultural icons still live and work, and it wasn't a welcoming place 50 years ago. The First Lady grew up across the street from South Shore High School. The new International College Prep is a creation of many, many South Shore residents, elected officials and citizens determined to put aside differences to create a school of excellence, once again in this community. We must continue to call that school South Shore..

This school and its heritage is a big part of my life and the lives of thousands of other SSHS alumni who still live in the community. Rather than separating the current student body from a rich history of proud and productive graduates, the school and the LSC should be looking for ways to build stronger ties.

Here we are from afar, the mighty South Shore Tars! Keep the name. It belongs to the community, the alumni and all those who take pride in its legacy.
