We are high school students in Toronto and elsewhere attending both private and public schools who condemn the recent attacks by select students from Jarvis Collegiate Institute on members of the queer community in the Church and Wellesley neighbourhood of downtown Toronto . These acts are unacceptable and constitute hate crimes under federal law. These deplorable actions do not represent the collective values of all students and we encourage students of conscience to speak up against them. We urge the TDSB to further educate students at Jarvis CI about the negative impact of homophobia and heterosexism. As well, we recommend greater dialogue between the school and the community.
