Respected Minister Jairam Ramesh, Chief Minister Of Tamil Nadu & All The Others Who Have The Power, On behalf of all the people of the state, we forward to you this petition regarding allowing BT Brinjal & Genetically Modified foods into Tamil Nadu. Genetically Modified Cotton (BT Cotton) was a failed venture which lead to the death of goats which grazed the fields and gave boils in the hands of the farmers who harvested them. A government report in India showed that Monsanto's GE cotton produced a net income that was 5 times less than non-GE cotton. over 400 farmers commited suicide as a result.  Now, we are in a situation where we have to take BT Brinjal, containing the same bacterial gene as BT Cotton, for us to eat. The consequences of this technology have not been completely researched or tested. Cross pollination from GM plants to natural plants might also lead to mutations. This technology should still be in controlled environments of laboratories and not in the open where they can cause danger. Also, GM foods are patented, meaning, farmers don’t own their seeds anymore. It gives them an ominous control over our food industry.
Hence, we humbly request you to ban the entry of BT brinjal or any GM product into Tamil Nadu.
