Our beautiful town is losing its appeal as tourist destination with visitors canceling bookings. Residents' taps are dry. We desperately need funding to replace the ailing, 30 year old asbestos underground pipes.

Port Alfred needs water

Water is often absent from pur taps. There are times when the water is brown or it smells strongly of chemicals and causes my families skin to get rash or pur eyes to become red and scratchy. Port Alfred needs a strong team of knowledgeable people on the water service team who can manage the water system, find and repair failing elements of the water delivery lines and ensure the water reclamation or water treatment plants are running optimally all the time. All water pipes, water pumps, and water plants need to have knowledgeable and dedicated teams to ensure constant supply.

In the 15 years I've been staying at 11 Hardsstreet we never ever had problem with water but lately we have to beg to get water during the day, sometimes going for almost 2 weeks without it. Night time between 2 and 5 we do get water if we are lucky which means you have to get up when everyone is sleeping to fill your bottles, do your dishes and washing - absolutely ridiculous!!!

One is entitled to 6kl of free water. It is a basic human right. Poor/No water supply is conducive to hygiene and health concerns. Also, is tourism not one of our huge income generators!!!

Our area keeps on having water pronlems, and they take very long to resolve. It causes alot of people to not be able to bath themselves, their babies, their children and their clothes. It is a very unhygienic situation. It seems to be staggered, each area of Port Alfred suffers badly during the year at different times. The pipes and valves are very old and brittlebut it is not made a priority ti replace the pipelines section by section. Instead they just fix leaks and do emergency patch up jobs. It is very distressing. There is money given by the government but for the wrong things at tge wrong time eg. For a pricey sewage rectycling plan overhaul when there is no water to recycle in any case. How are new house plans approved without 6 water tanks at least planned per household.
