TriMet's management team has launched a new fare confrontation campaign that we believe is unsafe and unfair. Specifically:

Road and Rail Supervisors have been told that, each day, they must confront a minimum of 35 people in one hour, demanding to see their fares.

It is "expected" that these confrontations will result in each road and rail supervisor issuing at least 4 citations per hour.

These citations will cost the recipient $175 each.

We have been instructed that we cannot give warnings and no excuse provided by the passenger will allow us not to issue one of these expensive citations.

We have been given no meaningful or realistic training in how to perform this task in a way that is safe for us, those passengers we confront, and other passengers.

We have been instructed to focus our fare confrontation activities on the Yellow Line into and out of North Portland with an emphasis on the Albina/Mississippi stops as well as all stops along Interstate Avenue. We believe TriMet management's new enforcement policy is unsafe and unfair to us and to TriMet riders. We demand that TriMet cease setting citation quotas, restore the written warning for first time fare evaders and cease targeting certain geographic areas of our community for fare evasion enforcement. The momentum behind this effort has grown beyond my initial expectations. It is clear that the community rejects these punitive enforcement quotas and demands a more equitable approach to transit safety.

4 citations per hour? that is totally set up for failure. leave the riders alone and let the drivers focus on driving.
Fix the service before you start fining everyone into poverty. $175 is way too much for a mistake.
Total BS. Targeting specific neighborhoods is wrong. Shame on trimet for turning into a police force instead of a transit agency.
Dangerous for the workers and the riders. whoever came up with this plan clearly doesnt use the max.
stop picking on the yellow line. we deal with enough delays as it is without some supervisor harassing us over a transfer.

This is ridiculous. People are just trying to get to work. Quotas like this are just a cash grab against people who can least afford it.
