I believe wearing masks at school should not be required and will do more harm than good. I have research articles that support my opinion.
RESEARCH :
Understanding the differences in respiratory protection of different mask types is found on the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/images/100years/UnderstandDifference3-medium.jpg In the CDC’s very own infograph on this link, it states that while a surgical mask is “fluid resistant and provides the wearer protection to large droplets, splashes or sprays of bodily or other hazardous fluids”, it does “not provide the wearer with a reliable level of protection from inhaling smaller airborne particles and is not considered respiratory protection.” The same CDC infograph also lists info on an N95 respirator and states that it “reduces wearers exposure to particles including small particle aerosols and large droplets”. In contrast to the surgical mask, the N95 “filters out at least 95% of airborne particles including large and small particles”, but research studies show that an N95 respirator is not recommended for use in children. The FDA website also states that the N95 mask is not recommended for use in children.
The N95 EUA Summary Fact Sheet for Disposable Respirators for Use During the Swine Flu Emergency authorized by the FDA on 5/1/009 cites on page 2 that “Respirators were not designed to fit children. Children’s faces may be too small for the respirators to fit properly and provide protection. Children may have difficulty breathing with use of respirators and may not be able to let others know if they are having trouble breathing.” This Fact Sheet can be found at

Masks will cause more social, emotional, academic and physical issues in the classroom. Teachers and students will not be able to communicate effectively, not to mention the many distractions masks will cause. Some school buildings also do not have air conditioning.

I am writing to express my family’s opposition to requiring social distancing, masks/cloth face coverings, temperature checks and numerous other measures as a response to COVID-19 in Illinois schools. These procedures are socially, emotionally, psychologically and physically damaging to our children; moreover, there is no solid science to support their implementation.
First, current data shows that children are not an at-risk group for COVID-19 (source: tinyurl.com/thechildisnottoblame) and the World Health Organization states that asymptomatic transmission is extremely rare (source: tinyurl.com/covidasymptomatic). Additionally, recent data shows that fatality rates from COVID-19 are akin to a bad seasonal flu (Source: tinyurl.com/covidseverity). Original predictions were grossly inaccurate. Throughout this crisis, many daycares have remained open, and some countries never shut down schools, affirming that schools are not negatively impacting health outcomes.
Second, requiring masks or cloth face coverings and social distancing impedes schools in educating while causing psychological harm to students. Masks create a physical distraction to students and act as a barrier for teachers to effectively communicate. Masks and social distancing will psychologically impact students, particularly younger children and those with special needs. These measures reinforce an unhealthy concept of isolation as well as a fear of others, the world and germs. Without the ability to physically interact or see the faces of adults and their peers, the special needs programs in our schools, including speech and occupational therapy, will be unable to function. Furthermore, the New England Journal of Medicine’s May 21, 2020, Perspective states, “We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection” (source: tinyurl.com/maskperspective).
Third, re-outfitting schools so they can adhere to CDC guidelines will cause financial burd

Mask wearing should be discontinued for all ages. There is NO PROOF that it keeps you from getting sick or preventing you making someone sick. There is PLENTY of proof it makes the mask wearer VERY ILL. And for children to be subjected to this, is child abuse plain and simple. I can see the lawsuits pending now. So Mr. Governor, if you have any ounce of compation you and the IDPH need to get rid of this ridiculous idea.

This will absolutely not fly for my kids. You are not basing this in science, at best it's based on fear. At worst it's based on control. Either way, I will not have my children believing they are germ ridden disease carriers. I will not have them physically and emotionally separated from their peers and teachers.
You're there to implement the best in education and protection of our kids. You've failed miserably with Common Core, even after it was labeled a disaster and a failed system. Try again, and get ahead of this purely political garbage.
