No Kill Toronto - Legislate Toronto Animal Services to be No Kill
Petiton to MAYOR FORD and City Councillors
to pass a motion directing Toronto Animal Services to achieve a minimum 90% save rate.
A no kill community is one that doesn’t kill healthy or treatable pets. Most no-kill shelters save 90% or more of the pets that enter their facilities. Toronto Animal Services (TAS) kills more animals each year than it adopts out. The pets most often culled are cats.
TAS Management say that they cannot run an open admission shelter without regularly killing the "less adoptable" cats. Yet, many shelters are able to deal with their homeless cat issue without killing healthy or treatable animals. Calgary Animal Control is no-kill. The Nova Scotia SPCA is no-kill. Many shelters throughout the Unites States are no kill: San Francisco CA, Austen TX, Reno NV, Tompkins County NY, etc. These cities achieved no-kill status following Nathan Winograd's No Kill Equation (see www.NoKillAdvocacyCenter.org). Even New York City is on it's 10th year of a 15 year plan to become no-kill. (See Mayor's Alliance on NYC's Animals).
TAS management will tell you that no-kill is expensive. But the Nevada Humane Society was 90 days away from bankruptcy when they decided to follow the No Kill Equation, and had a surplus of $11 million after the first year! They simply decided to do the right thing, stopping the killing, they told people about it, and they trusted that people will do the right thing. Animals were adopted, volunteers responded to the need for help, and the community donated what was needed to make the situation right.
There are no excuses!
Let's demand that TAS become no-kill. In November 2009, Austin City Council passed a resolution directing city staff to develop an implementation plan by March 2010 to achieve a 90% save rate. It's that easy. We simply need to ask Toronto's City Council to do likewise.
