We’re asking that the IBJJF do away with their system of assigning ranking points to gold medalists in single athlete brackets at their tournaments.

The practice incentivizes being alone in a division as a way to improve overall ranking or to gain better seeding at major tournaments. It is most often noted at the IBJJF Opens where there are fewer participants overall.

We are collectively asking the IBJJF to consider doing away with ranking points assigned to single bracket competitors. It is not in the true spirit of competition to get something for nothing.

As a large side note, the writers of this petition do not aim to look negatively on athletes who end up in a single athlete bracket for reasons out of their control. Sometimes they're bigger than other people in their age group, can't make weight to be in a division with the smaller opponents and must auto-gold so they can register for the open class to compete. Sometimes people drop out due to injury after the athlete check day has passed leaving their competitor alone in a division. These situations happen. We don't intend to shame people for being alone in a division. The aim here is to have the IBJJF stop assigning ranking points for medals that were given rather than earned.
