No Generative AI At Berklee- Disband Bots, Beats and Bytes

As a teacher, musician, and lover of art the legitimization afforded to a technology meant to replace and plagarize the works of humanity is insulting and an affront to the art form. Generative AI is proven to harm student learning and achievement and teaching students that it is ok to take shortcuts and plagarize the works of human artists sets them up for failure and frustration in their career pursuits.

Using AI completely misses the point of art. Art is about the process as much as it's about the result.

12 years ago, a Berklee tour guide spent the tour saying that Berklee was a school for "real musicians", and that I very specifically wasn't a "real musician" because my instrument was Ableton. So...production isn't real music, but AI garbage is fine now, I guess? What? The students deserve better than a school that thinks so little of their potential and abilities that an AI course could be seen as viable at all.

Art as a concept is dying.

I graduated with high honors from Berklee in 2025. It baffles me that a world-renowned institution that prides itself on having a culturally and musically diverse student body is so confident in grooming its students to train themselves on the tools that are replacing their careers. There was a spark of hope that I saw in all of my classmates and colleagues who graduated with me -- hope that their rigorous training in their chosen field would help them stand out and change the modern musical landscape for the better. That hope would be stolen from future generations of Berklee graduates should generative AI be normalized in higher music education. I stand by all the students who protest this course.

Hiring Jim Lucchese was already a misstep with his connections to Spotify and Sofar, this is not surprising that this is all happening under his watch, AI has no place at berklee.

Literally diminishing the value of student's degrees. Both past and future degrees.

Ai songwriting classes are idiotic. Imagine going to a class on novel writing and they just sit you infront of ChatGPT.

Cash grab plain and simple.

This school's logo is quite ironic in this context; nothing's less natural than AI. Get it together, people!

If AI songwriting is the future, people will not hire Berklee-trained composers to type in a prompt. They will do it themselves. However, people will always hire genuinely creative, skilled, and innovative composers. Teach students what they need to know, not what venture capital thinks they should know.

As someone that's been in the industry in varying professional to semi-professional quantities, seeing one of the biggest music schools drink the kool-aid on generative AI is pathetic. This is one of the worst things Berklee could have done regarding AI and they need to course correct immediately.
