This is a day that is commemorated only in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, so why should we have to fly the Communist flag at the city hall of Ottawa, Canada? Clearly we do not treat September 2 as a celebration.

In 1980, Ottawa's Mayor, Marion Dewar spearheaded Project 4000, an endeavour that saw 4000 Vietnamese refugees sponsored and brought to the city, finally safe from the horrors that they experienced not only under the Ho Chi Minh's communist regime, but also the atrocities that they endured when escaping from Vietnam during the Boat People movement. For Mayor Jim Watson to fly the Socialist Republic of Vietnam flag in honour of their "independence" is to dishonour Marion Dewar's memory, as well as serve as a big slap in the face to countless Vietnamese people now living in Ottawa, and Canada. The day that flag was flown, was the day freedom and human rights became a thing of the past in Vietnam. The day of Vietnam's "independence" was a sad day for all of the Vietnamese people who fought so hard against Ho Chi Minh's communist regime, and lost. The Vietnamese people living in Ottawa, and abroad, left Vietnam for a reason -- to escape the oppressive communist regime, and to never have to fly nor salute the communist flag, ever again. Please do not raise the Socialist Republic of Vietnam flag. As the daughter of two Vietnamese refugees and former Boat People, I urge Mayor Jim Watson to reconsider flying the Socialist Republic of Vietnam flag, and to honour and respect what Marion Dewar did for the city, over 3 decades ago, as well as the millions of Boat People who died trying to preserve their freedom and human rights, away from the communist regime of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
