If the promise was to freeze income tax then this "dividend" tax shows the Conservatives cannot be trusted. Calling an income tax increase by another name does not change it's nature. Dividend tax is still income tax taxed on income. It seems that SME owners on quite modest incomes could pay nearly one third more in tax?

it seems to me that with the auto-enrolment fiasco and now dividend tax this government is hell bent on clobbering small family owned ltd co's. I employ my wife and because of this I have to set up a pension even though nobody will pay into it & my dividend tax bill will be around £2k next year. whilst I didn't vote for the torys I always thought they were small business friendly. id be better off under Gordon brown and I never thought id ever say that!

Strangely the information about this huge tax increase was not included in the Conservative (party of business & enterprise!) manifesto? The Labour party is not required when the Tory party turns into a 1980s version of it!

The scandal of the largest corporations not paying their fair share of the UK tax needs has been brushed away. The power to change that situation lies with our government. They could increase the HMRC revenues significantly just by legislating to collect Tax from those corporations. However, those large corporations are simply paying only as much as they have to legally pay. Which business's wouldn't do that? So the easier choice is to raise a way of taxing the little guy because he is less able to fight back and he stands to lose everything if he doesn't pay up. It's a sad state of affairs. And the government are unlikely to get the next vote when it's time to do it again. But by that time the damage will have been done and many will have gone under. And that is exactly what the government is hoping for as those that have gone under will have no recourse to complain...they simply won't be there. And the big business will take over the sales of the small business. The situation is such that the lobbyists from the very big business are pushing our leaders into it as they have a longer term strategy. And once our leaders are no longer in power they will buddy up with the people that gave them what they wanted while they were in office and make much profit from it personally. Just look at how well Mr Blair is doing, better than when he was one of the most important people on the planet!

If you want to bring the tax on business owners dividends in line with salaried staff at least be honest enough to say that's what you are doing and have the decency to phase it in!

Just when clients are coming out of the recession and having the confidence to invest, something like this is proposed which will make them think twice before parting with their money. Where's the incentive for the budding entrepreneurs (other than the capital relief, which seems a long way off when starting out)?

An utterly miserable Conservative betrayal of the entrepreneurial SME. It is incumbent on the Conservatives to rethink this appalling strategy........and I believe this would be only the beginning, with hikes in the tax charge within the basic rate band.
