No Change For Granby School Times!

I completely disagree with uprooting the entire district when the impact of the focus group was on high school students. I do not want my 6 and 8 year old boys getting on the bus at 4pm. I am an educator in another district and I already send him to a before care program so his day is simply extended. This proposed changed has been implemented in low socioeconomic communities that are low achievement. This is unnecessary for our community. Simsbury and West Hartford tabled the discussion as well. This will have a significant impact on my family and not for the better.

My 2 elementary school kids shouldn’t have to change their schedules to accommodate high schoolers. Someone can teach high schoolers to go to sleep an hour earlier instead.

NO CHANGE!!!! high schoolers need to be able to manage their time, get off their devices and go to bed!!! what happens when they are in the working world and have a family or in college with early classes. This is in no way good for K-5, working parents, high schoolers that need to work or have after school activities. I prefer to know my kid is safe at school when I leave for work at the same time she gets in the bus. NO CHANGE!!!

Please make a rational decision in this matter. Families have work and can not afford before school care in addition to after school care.

We have asked and 0 research has been done to determine how this may effect the elementary school kids. How can they make a decision on what is best if they eliminate half the population? It would be next to impossible to pick both kids up (one at Wells, one at Kelly Lane), feed them, and get them to activities that start after school. It would also take away good family time at night because by the time they get home, have dinner, do homework, shower, etc; it will be time for bed. Important family time will be replaced with before care facility time costing $5k a year per kid at in town facilities that do not have the resources to accommodate this. Dr Adler said the best thing would be to have everyone start at 8:30. If they are that interested in what is the best for the students then buck up and pay, don’t pass the buck to the elementary school families who will be negatively impacted by this change. I wonder how the families who are for it it would vote for it if they had to pay $5k per Kid a year out of their own pocket for the change. Probably very few.

No to flip! We don’t need to pamper the big kids while the little ones are not getting enough sleep!

Absolutely opposed. I don't think this should be a BOE vote, I think this should be a town/community vote so everyone in this town gets a voice. Have the high school kids been polled too to provide their feedback? This very negatively impacts the younger kids - mine wouldn't get off the bus until almost 5, they'll be in bed later to accommodate for sports, dinner & homework but up at the same time each morning, & we'd go from $0 day care costs to $$ (I have no idea how much or where we'd bring them). High schoolers need to manage their time. Didn't we all need to do that? And look at us now...we're successful, thriving adults. If they have an extra hour before school, it's an extra hour they can stay up the night before. How will it impact class participation for those in sports, sports practice times, time for homework, & after school jobs? All of this for potential 1-4% improvement? No.

My high schooler and I both question the need to change.. With after school activities, her concern is that pushing out start times and end times would mean she’ would be doing homework later each night and would have no time to relax before bed.

We live in Hartland, my oldest will be graduating next year and wanted to go to Granby. This would be very hard if we had to drive her daily, because of our work schedules.

The change is moronic. Kids will still be tired.

I totally oppose to this. What are we teaching our young generations? That the society have to adjust to them instead of them adjusting to the society?

District already going thru many changes. Let the new superintendent, after they are hired, and principal settle in. Table this idea for the future after much more research on how this affects the ENTIRE community happens.

My children are in middle school & high school and even they are NOT in favor of the change. I feel for those families with younger children having to try to accommodate an earlier start time. Also, I am strongly against any change that is going to cost the town more money.
