The proposal to build a Super (their word not mine) Walmart currently before Lamar County is not just a quality of life issue. While not providing a single good or service that isn't already readily available within a three mile radius, yes, there will be more traffic and traffic accidents, more stop lights, more blight when the current Walmart on 98 decides to close, and more that detracts from our overall quality of life.
More than that though this proposed development will be a drag on the finite resources of surrounding city and county governments, and if allowed to build unconditionally will eventually be a net net net loser for the taxpayers among us.
Smart Growth demands that we consider the distant future. And Smart Growth would demand that proposed developments by a behemoth of a company like Walmart or any other "big box store" or strip mall developer be kept on the hook long after they build in our community. The social contract that exists between a business and the community in which it exists is founded first on the notion that We the People allow said business to exist in the first place. Walmart does us no favor opening up in this new location. They come for one reason and one reason alone, to make a profit. To kowtow and give unfettered credit for "job creation" and "increasing the tax base" is shortsighted.
Hattiesburg has had too much urban sprawl West of I-59 since Hurricane Katrina particularly between Weathersby Road and Highway 589, and it is past time for the City and counties to catch up with the likes of developers advertising properties for a premium at Big Bay Lake as "one of a kind" all while marring the landscape with dime-a-dozen strip malls in our midst. It is not too late to stop the trend of disorganized and unsightly development of our City into the surrounding countryside.

I strongly oppose a new Wal-Mart in the proposed new location. We do not need it! The current one in highway 98 is plenty!

I do not feel there is a need for another Walmart this close to the Hwy 98 store. Purvis could support a small Walmart.

A major reason why we moved out this far is to distance ourselves from the commercial mess on hwy 98 and Hattiesburg proper and live where there are still trees standing in open country and wildlife. Why do we need yet another Wal Mart when there already is one not so far away on 98? This, as well as the Bellevue incorporation, is all about money for businessmen, developers, realtors, lawyers, and, ultimately for city tax revenue. Wake up, y'all!

Please do not approve any large retail stores like Wal Mart to be built in west Lamar county on hwy 98 or 589.
