Minnesota medical professionals urge MMA to remain opposed to assisted suicide

Please respect the dignity of human life. Where will we go from here? It's a small step in the wrong direction.

DO NOT APPROVE ASSISTED SUICIDE

Physicians should endeavor to sustain life not harm life.

Primum non nocere.

This is a dangerous trend. If legalized you or your family could be the next person to have assisted suicide pushed on you. It makes people feel like a burden and that is wrong. This is already happening in the states where it is legal. Being neutral is not an option. Assisted suicide is either legal or it is not.

Please remain opposed to assisted suicide.

As a retired occupational therapist, I, personally and professionally, support a wide spectrum of beliefs and practices that value life and include support for excellent end-of-life care and opposition to physician assisted suicide.

We do not need people dying this way in Minnesota. Abortion started out with the premise of being safe, legal, and rare. Now we are forced to pay for them and in the future may be required by law to offer them. Same with Euthanasia. It may start out as a choice but morph into duty to die as our most vulnerable are considered a burden. There is now a history of Euthanasia in Europe and in the US and can see the collateral damage and vulnerabilities. It has become available all through Canada. People come from all over the world to Mayo Clinic for care and hope. Why would Minnesota then offer the option to die. It would corrupt the trusted relationship between doctors and their patients.

We are called to eliminate suffering and not eliminate the sufferer. We should work together to support and help our patients and make their lives better.

We must stand clear and firm. Physician assisted suicide is not an option for any dedicated, conscientious physician. Int stands in complete opposition to all the values that led us into the medical field.

Assisted suicide is morally unethical. It violates the medical profession to "do no harm."

The Oath I swore prohibits euthanasia or assisting suicide. Over two millennia of moral standards didn't suddenly become wrong overnight. The last time medicine deviated from this was in 1930's Europe and US when the eugenics movement and utilitarian values reigned. Look at Germany then. Look at Belgium now. That's why I am fighting back.

As someone said at the MMA meeting on this subject, "If we can end life at it's beginning, why not at the end?" So true. Abortion and Euthanasia are linked in a lack of respect for life.

As a MMA member I am strongly opposed to participating in killing any human being for any reason. If pain is a problem, get a different specialist that can help you.

Health care professionals are called to be Healers, not killers. Never forget, killing people is what they did at Aushwitz.

Please keep assisted suicide out of the healthcare profession!

Please do not be neutral on this subject. Physician assisted suicide is not in anyone's best interest. The current legislation promoting PAS in Minnesota is a terribly written bill that mandates dishonesty in our relationship with patients.

I am a respiratory therapist & a pulmonary function technologist in MN. I do not want assisted suicide to prevail in my state.
