Minnesota medical professionals urge MMA to remain opposed to assisted suicide

Please oppose the legalization of assisted suicide.

As a leader serving seniors and persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, we need to maintain certain protections in the end of life to prevent abuse of power, neglect, and over time more and more potential of abuse as we have seen in other countries. We can do better than this option. In many cases, people who support this also want to reduce the stigma associated with suicide as a whole. While we combat suicide among veterans and the aging as a growing problem, we cannot suggest something that can be construed differently even if made into words such as aid in dying. I pray that we would strive as a country not to permit such power given to government or people but rather that we protect ourselves from abuses that we have seen in this area in Canada and other European countries.

Physicians take an oath to "do no harm". Assisted suicide is not death with dignity and goes against the Hippocratic Oath.

All life matters at all stages of life. It is not ours to take.

I could never support assisted suicide as a practicing physician and agree wholeheartedly with this petition.

The MMA should stand firm against this national descent that we as a society have the right, knowledge or ethitcal capacity to determine a patient's death.

Our job is to heal patients or walk with them until natural death. Not to kill them.

I am a recent retired nurse and have also cared for family members until they passed away. I was blessed to to do so. Each one was comfortable to the end and we shared some quality time together. I have a niece that lives in Washington that has terminal cancer. She wants to visit family and friends in Minnesota before she dies and it would be sad if people would talk her into suicide before she would be able to make those visits. Doctor has talked her out of continuing chemo therapy. She trusts in the Lord!
