To Our State Decision Makers:
I have followed the issue of funding for mental health and believe the current legislative course will place the community mental health system at risk due. The proposed changes in policy and funding are of great concern to me. I support the advocacy efforts currently taking place.
Please take the necessary action to protect the community mental health centers and the people they serve. These treatment programs are an essential community resource, and, without them, our society will be more vulnerable to a number of risk factors. This includes increased crime, homelessness, and overburdened hospitals.

I seriously hope that the time is taken to thoroughly evaluate the likely impacts this will have on the many individuals in need, service providers and the system as a whole. Anyone who genuinely thinks this through will understand and see the detrimental implications that will inevitably quickly surface and snowball. This new funding model WILL be devastating and make things so much worse than it is now! This is not the way to fix an already troubled system.

As an LCSW who has worked in this field for over 20 yrs, I can attest to the time beyond scheduled sessions that clinicians spend in the service of their clients especially in various aspects of case management. Many of the clients whom we serve require assistance and advocacy in many aspects of their lives. As their symptoms alleviate they become better able to handle these issues themselves but in the midst of a serious mental illness usually cannot function at the level required to manage the tasks of daily life. The new fee structure will not support the care which we currently provide.

Continued care is most needed. They can either end up long term in hospital or in jail without proper care as a prevention.

Mental health is a very serious issue and our efforts to treat all NJ residents regardless of socioeconomic standing must not be stifled due to the decisions of short sighted policy makers. Keep mental health services available to ALL.

Only with sufficient state assistance can we really try to reach as many persons in need of mental health treatment as possible. By backing away from funding, the state is also turning its back on people and blocking a door to services.

It's hard to imagine the mental health system having even fewer resources . . . it is already struggling to meet the needs of so many. A fee for service funding model won't allow for any work related to increasing outreach efforts, violence prevention programs, family success programs - many positive changes that aim to reduce stigma and increase community involvement in the mental health system. These efforts just do not fit a fee for service model.
