A major flaw is that a significant share of living units are occupied by renters, and the reality is that tenants are oblivious to city taxes, so when tenants vote, taxes aren't a big issue for them. The City meanwhile lives under the illusion that we are wealthy landowners who can simply pass along these tax increases, hidden in the tenants rents...but in reality, most of us aren't wealthy, and we can't immediately raise rents to cover these magnitudes of taxes. So how about the City imposing a tax directly on tenants, kind of like England's council tax. In this way, the government can't hide behind us landlord/owners to do the taxing for them, and tenants will have voice in the tax levels via their vote.

We have spent years trying to educate the City about taxes and spending yet nobody is listening. We elected our Alders to represent us, but despite promises of "it'll never happen" almost all voted for the 11% increase. "Taxation without representation is TYRANNY." Anyone studying political science should know that! Shame on our Alders. And then days later, while we are receiving our tax bills, the Mayor has the AUDACITY to give some city employees RAISES. We taxpayers have effectively had our incomes cut. CUT the salaries of City employees. I'd bet if that happened the 11% increase would NEVER have been passed.
Fred G was right, our property taxes have increased EXPONENTIALLY over the years.
And as far as landlords go, if you think affordable housing is a problem now, consider the percentage of income from small rental properties that go directly to pay the taxes coupled with the extremely high insurance costs in New Haven. This is NOT sustainable. Shame on our Alder and his cohorts; Shame on the Mayor; shame on the City of New Haven. Be assured, this petition is just the beginning of the rebellion.

Homeowners and long term residents are tired of being the city’s ATM. The city doesn’t seem concerned as many of us prepare to move away. The ballooning population of young professionals who rent high end modern apartments are supporting the city’s economy but quickly move on. The backbone of invested citizens will eventually disappear, who knows- perhaps that’s what administrators want.

You are playing with residents' lives and their livelihood. I know of many people who won't buy a house in the city because the tax rate is so high. What happened to being a livable city?

With this tax increase, the administration has brought many of us to the tipping point, financially. We will be moving our business, as our lease has us paying the taxes. With this increase, our rent and taxes are not sustainable.
When we purchased our home 30 years ago for $155,000., the taxes were $1550. Thirty years late,r our house has increased in value 3 fold yet our taxes have increased 8X. There is little sensitivity to what homeowners can afford and much sensitivity to city salaries, new positions and benefits.

Shame on the Alderman that failed to serve and protect the residents and small business owners here in New Haven! We are watching our good neighbors leave as they cannot shoulder this additional financial burden. A sad time for New Haven!

This is absolutely horrendous. This is absolutely unsustainable and fiscally irresponsible. My family has roots in New Haven for over 6 decades and, unfortunately, you've made it impossible to justify staying any longer.
