Reasonable taxes are necessary for the functioning of a healthy city with strong services. Somehow we have outrageously high taxes failing services AND No end in sight. The mill rate here is exorbitant and then 11% increase with no meaningful plan for adjustment of expenditures is outrageous. Every dollar of increased should be matched with two dollars of spending cuts with a plan for long-term physical stability without sacrificing core public services like the school and Public Safety. We love living here and are fighting to stay but at some point it isn’t sustainable.

Purchashed my house in 2000 and my taxes were $4000. Now they are almost $20k. Neither my house or rents have gone up 5x. I cannot afford repairs at this time. Please help and cut costs elsewhere.

So: with no meetings widely publicized to explain this massive tax increase; secret raises from the mayor’s office that were hidden from the board of alders; and tens of millions being pulled from the pension fund...I guess citizens are just supposed to bow our heads and pay up?

After the payments for school construction peaked and then subsided (as planned by prior administration) and after so many new construction projects have been added to the grand list, our property taxes should have been reduced, not increased.
This is not acceptable.

This is the last straw for many businesses and residents. When the businesses leave New Haven, there's not much left to tax. This is ruining the city.

Oliver Wendell Holme asserted taxes were the price of civilization. So, I don't complain about paying taxes, atlas not when those taxes are reasonable. New Haven taxes are reaching the level of unreasonableness.

This most recent tax hike is just another way to prove to the citizens of New Haven that all we are is a pocketbook for those who feel entitled to everyone else's dollars. There is no thought to the long term effect on those of us on fixed incomes, just beginning jobs, raising families, or any other person that is not wealthy.
Our mayor, the board of alders, the Board of Ed,, any person in a position of administration in the City all seem to feel that the general population is there to continue to take from.
It needs to STOP NOW. We are not here to support the mayor, her friends in City Hall, the supertinendent of New Haven Schools, the bloated NHPS administrative clique downtown, or any other group that can't seem to live without huge salaries and extra perks. It is time to cut administrative positions, salaries, perks, etc. until the city can live within it's means without pushing the population being unfairly taxed to the point of needing to leave.
CUT SALARIES OF ALL ADMINISTRATION AND POLITICAL OFFICE HOLDERS before levying this or any other taxes.

This is just another nail in the coffin after the "phase-in" of DeStefano's massive increases--is it so hard to be responsible and make New Haven thrive where property values and neighborhoods rebound, where people want to move to and start businesses--this tax increase along with John DeStefanos's MASSIVE "phase-in" and fiscal mismanagement is precisely why New Haven is suffering--there is an old saying that still rings true, you can't spend what you don't have, time Mayor Harp reflects on that--raises on the backs of the city's taxpayers, time to reflect on your oath of office Madam Mayor and work FOR New Haven NOT against it, then when the budget is balanced AND the city has substantial cash reserves, then and only then should any city employee receive a pay raise--this would be absolutely laughable if it weren't the tragic reality of the state of affairs in New Haven.

When the budget is balanced and the city is in the black, that's when raises are to be given--for those who have earned them by being responsible stewards of the taxpayers finances. Ct already has the distinction of being one of the highest taxed states in the country, how can city officials who take an oath of office betray their taxpayers by placing such burdens on them, and making the city of New Haven a place where those looking to purchase homes and start businesses a place to avoid.

My taxes went up 20% last year -- and when many neighborhoods saw a decrease.... Many of the people that got breaks last year, and back at ground zero this year. That is the Election Cycle shell game
