Petition to Build a New Police Station: New Price, New Location

Listen to the people. Representative government works,

too much traffic on Madison, don't combine police and courts. Courts should be a neutral space.

The voters are clear: Purchase of a traffic-challenged, contaminated property is NOT voter approved. We need a new location and a new plan.

can we sue the city if they keep pursuing this?

imagine if the city council decided a more efficient use of taxpayer funds would be to find a new, safe location, effectively showing its accountability to the island police force and taxpayers, deserving of a common sense "yes" vote for funding.

I voted against Prop 1 as too costly. I oppose the proposed Madison Avenue location and/or effort from the city to take on clean-up of the Madison Avenue building.

I do not feel that the location on Madison best serves the community. This is why I voted no on Prop. 1. I wish to support the BI police in a new facility, positioned in a better location.

Not the location north of city hall. Prefer next to fire station on 305 & Madison.

I'm signing this petition for all the reasons stated so clearly by Debbi Lester and others since I, too, am concerned that our City Council might ignore this resounding defeat and allow the purchase of the contaminated site to proceed. The voters clearly rejected the City's $15 million "public safety facility bond" proposal. No doubt the stunningly high percentage vote of 75.6% (final count) was due, in no small part, to the revelation of a previously undisclosed fact - that a toxic site was targeted for purchase. . By contrast, the City listened in May 2009 when the community voted overwhelmingly (70%) for a "change in form of government" to a council/manager system. Well, the community has spoken once again, even more loudly (75.6%). I join the community in asking Council to push the "reset" button, to come up with a better plan, and to let the community know that they've been heard.

Taxpayers' preferred location is rebuilding police station on existing HWY 305 site, or, co-locating with fire on HWY 305. Leave the court in Rolling Bay where we've already paid for building upgrades. Troubling that the City wants to circumvent this vote; a 75% margin is huge.

Stop wasting time looking at a doomed site which a super majority of voter (i.e. Tax Payers) have voted clearly against.

You would think the epic failure of the bond to pass would be enough to get the message across, but no. Here's the same message again, we can only hope the City Manager hears it this time.

A toxic site! $170,000.00 a year! You people need a reality check and start earning those big pay checks. Why should I pay for your fun and games. Not this time. Come up with a realistic plan. Move from the present site, built your new building right there same spot and move back in.

COBI manager and council please step down from your stubborn position on the purchase of the contaminated land. Further and immediately please initiate steps necessary to construct a new police station.

Winslow Way and Madison are not streets which can take more traffic, particularly emergency traffic. And the housing developments that will add to that traffic are not yet occupied.

To proceed with the plan to acquire the contaminated site undermines the democratic process. I encourage city council to continue to represent the interests of the citizens of Bainbridge Island, whom collectively have voiced their opinion on this matter quite clearly.

The use of public monies for any project should be done with the interests of the taxpayer as the first priority. Common sense would indicate that you do not buy property at inflated values and you do not build a public facility on a known contaminated site. This is a betrayal of the interests of ALL ISLANDERS.
