New LIU Grading Policy For Nursing Program 2015-2016

I believe it's not fair to us students...

We entered program under specific guideline that everything counts toward your grade. The change can be for new students not the students already in program.

I continue to read all of the comments and it's truly heart breaking. This is why we must unify to implement change. Let's keep the signage going and forward this link to everyone we know so all voices can be heard. All I can say is stay strong and focused because all of your work and efforts will not go unnoticed. I completely understand what all of you are going through. I was there to and it seems like nothing has changed since then. Don't let it discourage you from becoming an awesome future RN's.... I dont get why if they were just awarded for having great nurses, then why change a program no one signed Up for. We signed up for what was a competitive program that would prepare us for the real world. I knew what I was getting my self into in terms of hard work and studying, but this is just a setup for failure. I have been an A student, some Bs here and there, and now for the first time in my academic career I am failing. I have never studied so much in my life. All i do is go to class and go home and study for hours to then take a test with questions pulled out of fod knows where... Ive been practicing nclex style questions, and even nclex is more straight forward than the tests they give us. This is ridiculous. I feel completely deceived by all these changes and is not what I expected. I have worked in the field and I know I am capable of becoming a nurse with the right education and instruction... But this experimenting and crap their pulling off is complete injustice.

To implement a new grading policy while we have already been in the school and sign a contact that is really unfair for the students because upon entering LIU on the contract that I signed it said that we have to maintain a 76.45 to pass a class. "It did not say anything about only having test and quizzes and then assignments and ati will be added at the end".

I'm not disagreeing about the grades or whether labs, concept maps, ati should or shouldn't be accounted, but only that this grading policy and the whole curriculum needs to be changed. As a student, I use the syllabus to based my grades and what I should be studying. It's unprofessional for a program to be changing a syllabus mid-semester, actually no, changing the whole system at the end of the term. Don't tell us to read these pages or these chapters and on the day of the exams/quizzes/midterm we should have read the whole book. This is setting the student body to fail. No student in this program wants to fail because we paid and sacrificed our lives to be here.

First and foremost, they are not testing us on NCLEX type questions. The professors create questions that are entirely unfair to the student body. Understanding that their is always most than one answer correct however, these questions that they are giving out is set out to weed the student body. Considering the professors have a lottery each semester as to what percentage of the students fail (great motivation LIU!) , they are setting up their students for failure and continue being the greedy people they are. Our tuition is YOUR pay Professors. If you would care about your career and the future of not only LIU , but the world you would be more compassionate and show empathy for YOUR students. Last time I checked, those characteristics were the first things that were taught to us. However, as the semester went by , it goes to show that this school is in critical need of an evaluation! I can severely see why the NCLEX rates fell over the pass 2 years and based on speaking to a majority of the Nursing Students, its not the students fauts but rather this curriculum as a whole. Keep the 76.45 but how can it be possible for all the other work which is time consuming and irrelevent to the course itself not be equated in? Being the test subjects in your experiment is not the way to go at it and frankly I am tired and exhausted over what I've seen thus far in LIU. This issue needs to be adressed to not only to LIU but to the public for those considering in being admitted into this school. I am ashamed over how the lack of care this school has for its students. Its more concern is how they will continue keep funded. There was a 10 million dollar(not sure if this is the exact amount) grant given to the school because of great nurses coming out of the LIU curriculum that was not touched and left the way it was because it worked for everyone. We all understand, the Nursing Program is tough. We never expected it to be easy or be spoon fed. However, we had never thought it would

I am lost for words when it comes to this school. It is not right how they are treating their students! Coming from a school that on orientation spoke so much about how each student matters and they go up and beyond for each one of us. I feel that LIU nursing program goes up and beyond for no one but themselves. I was so excited to enter this curriculum and now I am full of regret. It's a shame how they offer us no help, they throw us into this class that is rushed through with out teaching us how to think like a nurse. Then when you ask for help they tell you to make study groups. I have tried all- I have 2 textbooks, I have ATI, I read before and after class, I make my own notes plus notes from professors slides (which are a joke), I bought extra study guide books, and use multiple resources from internet... Yet I am still border line. The extension they gave us was just throwing us a bone. In reality it doesn't benefit because yet again we aren't being tought how to take these exams correctly. They changed the curriculum and didn't inform anyone until the day of orientation- on the LIU website they still have old curriculum listed. Who is being sneaky there? I am disappointed in the way we are treated and lack of professionalism in this school. If I could do it over I would have went to another school had I known the disorganization and careless that goes on with in the nursing department. I didn't think it would be easy but I also didn't think I would be crying every day and feeling like such a failure. I hope that we get the signatures needed and that something is done to help us. My recommendation to this school is that they make a pre req for N190 mandatory to incoming students to prepare them for critical thinking and how to take a nursing exam. Don't make it so easy for us to get in then fail us and waste our time and money. It's not right to this to your students LIU!

I think the school should evaluate their professors. Success depends on the professors as well the students. If during a semester 17 to 20 people fail a class. The school should be ashamed, because obviously the professor's method of teaching is not effective. So LIU you want to be successful! Listen more to your students.

I understand the need for an amended grading policy; but, disagree with how it is enacted. Why are we given this supplementary work, when they don't affect overall grade? Given that most of us have a work overload, this supplementary work ( concept maps, assessments) should be designed to help students get through the course. Also, the style of questions are NOT NCLEX. If the objective is to pass the NCLEX on the first try, Why not teach us how to take NCLEX questions? Even for the NCLEX exam : test-takers are first taught about the style of questions, and how to take them; we have not been given anything. Overall, I'm disappointed with indifference of the teaching board. We are taught to show empathy, but no empathy is shown towards us.

What's the point of all these extra stuff like papers, projects , ati , etc if it won't help your average?

The grading system in many of our opinions was not properly thought out and is totally unfair to the students. It really seems to be some sort of poor prediction proccess toward finding students who will definitely pass the nclex... I know nurses that passed the nclex no problem and nurses that it took several attempts and that sidnt determine a better nurse.

Whatever you're doing LIU isn't going to help your students it will only drag them down. No wonder this school is losing its good reputation smfh. Is this even legal? Lol

I agree, it is unfair to keep changing policies on us and then not even properly explaining things to us. I don't think we should have to work with these new policies.

This program looks great from the outside but once you get in it is one curve ball after the next. Professors and staff are unprofessional and rude about mostly EVERYTHING. they think by changing the grading policy for all students including 1st levelers will change they're nclex grades but I'm sure it won't &not counting work that we take our time out to do is complete nonsense, whether a student fails a quiz / exam doesn't reflect on the students learning ability and if they're "fit" to be a nursing major and as an adult all professors know that most average students will be great hands on nurses. 76.45 is fair as an overall passing rate and be my guest if you want to change the grading policy you should be doing it the fair way, not throwing it at students 2 days before classes start at orientation or else have of the 1st level students probably would've chosen an equally accredited nursing program for less money & fair grading policies.

Agreed. 76.45 average without assignments is tough. Then, the questions given are ridiculously complicated.
