I was disappointed when Alien 5 got shelved, though I'd already braced myself – a true sequel to Aliens seemed too good to be true. Still, comments from the cast made me think that it might still happen. Sadly though, it appears that I was right to avoid getting my hopes up.
I had no problem with Ridley Scott making a Prometheus sequel; however, Alien 5 is more appealing to me because it would potentially be a long-awaited, satisfying follow-up to Aliens. You only have to look at the responses to the preliminary art and overall concept to see how excited many fans were – even James Cameron complimented the script. The fact that Prometheus 2 changed title and shifted focus in light of the excitement surrounding this film speaks volumes.
I don’t understand the studio not being more proactive in getting this film made, especially since there’s no way it wouldn’t make money. People talk negatively about fan service but it seemed to work for The Force Awakens; plus, why shouldn’t you serve the fans? We’re the ones who pay to see the movie. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, and the idea of alternative timelines/universes or other sci-fi ideas grants the possibility of undoing a franchise’s mistakes. 20th Century Fox should know that from X-Men, and it should also note the current popularity of expanded universes. I don’t know why there’s a perceived either/or situation re: the prequels and this proposed sequel.
It makes no sense for Fox to put the brakes on a film that was abuzz with excitement and that would surely be lucrative and in line with the angle being taken by other studios. Realistically, there’s a limited window of opportunity for this movie, and it would be a missed opportunity if Fox let it pass. Alien 3 was disappointing enough without raising fans’ hopes all these years later only for it to amount to nothing.

Why cannot the Neill Blomkamp concept for Alien5 co-exist with the current prequel/reboots? by Ridley Scott..in over 50 years working in entertainment this might be one of the top 20 bonehead moves by a studio I've ever seen. even more when it involves such a well loved and profitable generational franchise.

Blomkamp is the natural predecessor to Scott and Cameron stylistically as well as theme. In time and with the right movies I think he will be one of the big ones someday. Maybe a Scott or Cameron joint effort with Blokamp. Either way this is the film that we have all been waiting for.
