I live in Wales and speak Welsh. The Afrikaans language is no more racist than is English (Rhodes was English-speaking not Afrikaans), German or Russian.
Universities dedicated to different languages (all of which will make use of English language books and online material too, and so even courses in Afrikaans or Zulu are never wholly monolignual) will enrich and give rights to all SA citizens.
Universities in Sotho, Zulu, Afrikaans give prestige to those languages and also the speakers of those languages. They create jobs (publishing, printing, events) through the medium of those languages. A Sothe language university to empoyer poor Sotho speakers in a way many laws wouldn't.
Being cosmopolitan does not mean being English-speaking.
Stellenbosch needs to be a part of the renaissance of the Afrikaans language by confirming the demographic reality of its speakers and confirming that it is a vibrant, multi-ethnic language of the world and an example to other language communities in Africa and world-wide.
Afrikaans isn't racists, Afrikaans universities are not racist (if languages were racist then why are German universities still open?). People are racists. The best way to beat racism is to work within and challenge the racism of a community in the language of that community.
Stellenbosch as an Afrikaans university to help consolidate Afrikaans as a civic and multi-ethnic language. Turning Stellenbosch into an English language uni will make Afrikaans an ethnic and narrow language.

Stellenbosch sal daarmee ook net nog 'n universteit word. Die ANC jubel hieroor. Dis wat gebeur as ruggraatlose mense sonder visie aan die stuur van Ikoon-instansies geplaas word.
