Nebraska Divestment Campaign to end the genocide in Darfur:
Since early 2003, the government of Sudan has supported and participated in genocide against black Africans in the Darfur region. To date, an estimated 400,000 innocent civilians have perished, 2.5 million have been displaced, and countless women have been raped as a result of attacks by government sponsored militias and Sudanese troops.
As residents of the State of Nebraska, we demand that the state divest from targeted companies that are providing revenue for genocide and providing little or no assistance to Sudanese civilians. The State of Nebraska legislature must immediately pass a bill requiring the divestment of public monies from the worst offending companies in Sudan, and the Governor must sign it so that economic pressure can be exerted quickly and effectively to bring peace and security to Darfur.
This divestment strategy is being used as a last resort; the government of Sudan has been unresponsive to diplomatic pressure. It is our hope that this pressure will impact the Sudanese government\'s behavior in such a way that it will end its genocidal practices.
I spent the entire morning digging through state investment records and honestly it is so much more complicated than I ever imagined though finding those specific links between our public funds and these companies keeps me fueled. People keep messaging me with these heartbreaking stories and articles from Darfur and I wish I had enough hours in the day to write back to everyone individually but just know that I am reading it all while I plan my next trip to the capitol.

I honestly never thought this would gain this much steam when I typed it out on my keyboard late at night but here we are and it just feels like things are actually starting to shift. The momentum is honestly wild because people really do care about what is happening in Darfur and now I just need to figure out the best way to get this in front of the people at the statehouse who keep ignoring the reality of the situation.

How can we keep investing in this? It is shameful that our tax dollars are going anywhere near people who commit genocide. Get our money out now.

Nebraska shouldn't be profiting from this misery. It's really that simple.

Total disgrace. Nebraskans want no part in funding this nightmare. Do the right thing.
