NAFTA's failure is obvious and can't be prolonged
Dear Mr. President, We are writing to you because the impact of the recession on working families in the US, Mexico and Canada is a clear symptom of NAFTA's free trade failure. As you are aware, the neoliberal policies of the previous administrations made financial institutions and corporations unaccountable; provoking a tremendous collapse of the economy and leading the world into a financial, economic, food and environmental crisis. The unemployment and poverty rates have increased. NAFTA's failure is obvious and can't be prolonged or extended anymore. It's not enough to include labor rights and environmental protections in the trade agreement without any mechanisms of enforcement. The side agreements for labor and environmental cooperation of NAFTA are also an example of the inefficiency of these agreements. Trade should be regulated by the state and the US corporations should respect human and labor rights, protect the environment and respect food sovereignty wherever they establish their business. The US corporations, like TRW Automotive with headquarters in Livonia, MI., should be accountable to the workers in Reynosa, Mexico. Workers in the US, Canada and Mexico are paying a high price for an economic crisis that they did not create. We urge you to address the NAFTA trade agreement with a realistic perspective, and to evaluate its social impact, instead of promoting NAFTA's renegotiation. Respectfully,
