Dear President Obama,
Your campaign was about HOPE, and the Power of the People to create CHANGE in a society where government has not represented them well. The situation in Honduras is emblematic of these same values. The fight of the people of Honduras is the same fight- to be able to say: WE WANT CHANGE! and YES WE CAN!
The people of Honduras have demonstrated peaceful resistance to the take over of their country. The legitimate and democratically elected President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya has demonstrated himself to be above and beyond the call of reason coming to the table to dialogue again and again, while the coup government has made a joke of the process of the San Jose Accord and the entire international community, including the United Nations and the U.S.A who have not recognized them as a legitimate government, the entire time holding the rights of the Honduran people hostage and continuing to wage human rights violations and stalling tactics -all to the detriment of Honduras and the Honduran people.
I call upon you and your administration to take a stronger stance an action on the de facto regime of Honduras: that the regime immediately end this standoff by undertaking the following actions:
1 .Guarantee of safety for President Zelaya’s life
2. Immediate withdrawal of troops from the perimeter surrounding the Brazilian embassy where the legitimate President of Honduras remains as a guest.
3. Cease intimidation tactics and Halt the widespread violation of human rights, and guarantee for the safety of members of social organizations, unions, political parties, and all other groups and individuals who oppose the coup.
4. Sign the accord and Restore President Manuel Zelaya to his elected term in office.
If these demands are not met, we urge the US administration to undertake the following actions:
1.Withdraw the US ambassador to Honduras and diplomatic ties with the coup government.
2.Freeze US bank accounts of coup-leaders, both in the private and public sectors.
3.Importation sanctions against coup owned companies and products
4.Not to support, recognize or validate any elections or their results undertaken under coup leadership
With Respect to the Honduran people and their right to determine their own fate we submit this letter to you...
The momentum behind this petition is proving that people refuse to stay silent while the coup regime in Honduras continues its brutal charade. Obama needs to stop hiding behind weak rhetoric and finally recognize that the people are watching his failure to act.
