Same stuff, always the same, nothing has changed :) but seriously there were some grammar/writing problems with your petition which is too bad because there were parts that were really eloquent and powerful. Also it is true that if you did not go to MUM to meditate then come on, obviously you didn't understand what you were signing up for. It is the whole reason MUM exists. But yes, this is its own "movement" which had gone on forever because the students are reflecting back something real, they are feeling something real, otherwise it would not be the same year after year with different people every time. It is amazing, alarming and a form of mental illness that the faculty and staff and movement officials still have not tried to feel about themselves what the students are bringing them And have been bringing them for decades. The maya is your reflection, fundamentalism is only a stage before a more advanced spirituality.

It's a little disturbing when I'm told practicing reiki is equal to channeling evil spirits. They automatically assume anything that's not TM is by default ineffective without knowing anything about it!! Yet we have people swearing TM isn't a spiritual practice and it's only a scientific method to enhance your own spirituality... Well which is it?

When students mess up, if they are sidhas, they are excused. When students complain, if they are meditators, they are told to become sidhas. This is circular logic and it is harmful. You are pitting the student body against itself.

These sentiments are similar to those that came up when I was enrolled in the last decade. MUM is a unique experiment with great potential. The rigidity of the old guard in the TM organization doesn't work well with today's young people. They're too smart to be sheep. Smart administrators will listen well to the students' ideas and honor their hopes.

I've lived in Fairfield my entire life and the non MUM townies have been treated lesser by the elder MUM for years.. My girlfriend went to Indian Hills for massage therapy, and was not able to finish. She saw that MUM offered the same program and was going to go until she found out about the strict TM guidelines. Needless to say she chose not to attend.

Agree with this entirely. The school has become very narrow minded. Shunning other spiritual practices should not be promoted as much as it is by faculty. And for the love of Krishna use some onions and garlic in the food. Sheesh!

Some comments: The percentage or number of students involved in creating the petition should be listed. Maharishi wanted to create a science, not a religion. He was quite clear about that his entire life. The main factor in that is that faith, belief, acceptance is not required or expected. The publicity and admissions process should make clear what M.U.M. is, and is for, so there is not a large gap between what is portrayed, and what is experienced. 'Science' is not just about scientific research. It is also about the scientific attitude and method. It is OK to present a body of little researched or unresearched knowledge (such as Jyotish, yagya, and Vastu), as long as it is presented hypothetically, as a reasonable hypothesis based on thousands of years of use. But logic should also be given, since many things that last a long time are not necessarily true. And little- or unresearched bodies of knowledge should not be presented as 'given facts.' That is not scientific. More research is needed and M.U.M. could encourage that. 'Science' is sometimes defined only as 'systematic body of knowledge.' An incomplete definition.. Most theology is systematic. So 'systematic' is definitely not enough to qualify as scientific. Science also requires a) the suspension of both belief and disbelief, and b) curiosity, receptivity, open-mindedness. M.U.M. should embody these scientific principles. Scientific does not mean being 'skeptical' and doubting. Science began and begins with wonder. It is a combination of openness and discrimination, the requirement of validation. Differentiation between religion and spirituality is fundamental. No faith is needed to practice or use any of the techniques of Maharishi Vedic Science, for example. Lifestyle is part of spirituality and has been all over the world for millennia. Good spiritual lifestyle examples should be offered and not required. Summary: M.U.M. is for spirituality plus good academics. It is more of a matter of livi

I am not a student, nor an alumnus, but I have lived in the Fairfield TM community for 33 years and support the concerns voiced here.

I'm an alumni from 2014, and can agree with what has been said in this article. I think the school is good, but has room for vast improvement. The relationship between the school and the TM movement needs to evolve. Maybe less MVS requirements and no grade on meditation. Also more physical yoga, the Maharishi asnas that were taught to me were too brief.

Although I am happy I came here to finish my undergrad, I can't help but sit here, with only a month left, thinking about what could have been better. I hope future graduating students of MUM don't have that same experience. There's too much potential here to let a good thing go to waste.

I applaud this petition. Let this be a warning to MUM that they must adapt or see a great potential wither beneath dogmatic perspective.
