We, Grandview Teachers, are respectfully reaching out in regards to our students of color. We have noticed a persistent pattern this year of our students making uneducated, exclusionary comments towards and about our students of color.

We have utilized the relevant Character Counts lessons and include diverse perspectives but still need more.

We are asking the district to research and provide additional curriculum or resources that explicitly teach the importance of multicultural diversity and inclusion to supplement Character Counts as part of our vision to engage, educate, and empower.

Thank you for your consideration and your continued support for all of our students, especially our students of color.

Respectfully,

Grandview Teachers

I love my school AND have been very surprised by the lack of understanding about diversity among our students. Something occurs almost daily in my classes (I see everyone) that points to a strong need for teaching and support in this area. We owe it to our students to teach them how to be good citizens of the world.

Safety is the foundation for human life and for learning. If our students do not feel safe because of exclusionary comments and/or actions, how can we expect them to meet their potential. All students deserve to feel safe at school and this is but one piece that can help ensure we provide a sense of safety for every student at Grandview.

This is so important as our students will be a part of a diverse, global society.

This needs to be addressed and I think this is the best way possible.
