Petition to Local Siskiyou County Retail Outlets: Please carry more non-plastic products!
As we hear in headlines almost daily, plastic pollution is a world-wide, catastrophic and growing problem for our oceans, other ecosystems, and all of humanity and wildlife.
We, the undersigned, recognize and are deeply concerned about this problem, as well as the fact that our current plastic recycling infrastructure falls far short of effectively addressing the issue. Therefore, in order to reduce our contribution to this global, noxious plastic waste stream, as consumers, we seek to create, purchase and utilize household products which are neither comprised of, nor contain any plastic in their packaging.
We also believe it is important to support our local retailers, rather than purchase online outside of our communities. Thus we request that your store:
1) Remove from your shelves all beverages in single-use, single serving size plastic bottles
2) Offer more products in bulk, such as fresh produce, grains, flours, nuts, etc. and offer reusable natural fiber bags for these products (this also helps avoid food waste, since customers can purchase only the quantities they need)
3) Offer plastic packaging-free household products, such as toiletries, soaps and detergents, cleaning products, etc. (Examples of options are listed below).

This is quite the challenge! We do what we can, but many healthy organic foods are still packaged in plastic.
Plastic needs to be replaced with items made of such things as mushrooms, hemp, etc. And then eventually ban plastic. It is highly toxic to create and highly toxic to recycle.
Simply put… There is way too much plastic packaging. I would much prefer to buy products that were plastic free… Not only is it a waste problem with plastic that does not degrade but also the plastic leeches phthalates which are Estrogen mimickers… We don’t need to be absorbing these types of things from plastic food items, hygiene items etc. Bad for health and bad for the environment.
I live in Siskiyou County and support businesses in out County that support our environmentally dependent economy. We have no reason to sell products where there are environmentally friendly alternatives. Bottled water is not necessary nor environmentally sound. Offer water to your customers free of charge encouraging them to bring there bottles to your business. Itskes good business sense.
Yes! Good stuff. Let's present Mt. Shasta as it is - clean, pristine, and wild. This should help eliminate some of the plastic we locals are constantly carrying out of the forest.
