~This petittion is dedicated to all of those lives lost on 9/11~ Have you heard of the plans to have a mosque built near ground zero? Hard to believe? Well its true. In fact members of community board 1 voted 29-1 IN FAVOR of this most disrespectful project. If this happens, the mosque will be 600 feet away from ground zero, and it will be a 13 stories.  Manhattan's Borough president Scott Stringer is in support of the Mosque. He said "What we're rejecting here is outright bigotry and hatred." Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the head of the Cordoba Institute, which is in charge of the project, insisted that the site would help "bridge the great divide" between Muslims and the rest of America. "We are Americans, we are Muslim Americans," Rauf said. "Many of us were born in the United States. We have no higher aspirations than to bring up our children in peace and harmony in this country." I am in support of only one thing, and that is the victims of 9/11 and their families. I knew someone who died that day. He left behind a wife, and three children.  I do believe that we all have the rights promised to us in the constitution, however I also believe that we should be understanding of this very sensitive subject. I feel if so many people are opposed to this mosque being built so close to ground zero, then those that are in favor of it, should take a step back and respect those feelings. Thousands of lives were lost that day.  Families and friends go there everyday to mourn the loss of their loved ones. I can only imagine how it would feel to have a 13-story reminder near by.  I believe that there should be some resolution between americans and muslim-americans, however this is not the way. This will become a breeding ground for more hatred and negative feelings.  For some people, ground zero is the only thing they have left to honor their loved ones. If peace is what we are reaching for, we must sign this petittion to stop the building of the mosque. We have to remember the victims(and families) of 9/11.

I have been reading through the messages you are all sending me and the stories about your own experiences are just heartbreaking. It feels like the people in charge are not looking at the map or thinking about the families at all. I am going to keep trying to get someone to listen because this is just too close to where so many people lost everything.

I really never thought this would take off like it has when I first started tapping away at my keyboard feeling so frustrated about the whole thing. Seeing all these people agreeing that we need to show some respect for the site is actually pretty overwhelming and I keep coming back to look at the comments because it reminds me that I am definitely not the only one who feels this way.

Its just wrong. Thousands of people died right there and this is like a slap in the face to all of them.

Too soon and way too close to such a holy place. Have some respect for the families who lost everything that day.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Find somewhere else. Ground Zero needs to be respected and left alone.
