I have a son, who has Down syndrome and I think a level of Autism. Although as yet undiagnosed I recognise some of the signs.

As a Special Needs Teacher in the North East I fully support this. It is frustrating to not have the power to offer every child the place they need. Children are left in mainstream provision with little support... this means a diminished future. We cannot wait 30 years to look back and think we needed to do this differently. Now is the time to fix this mess and treat each child with the care they deserve.

I was a primary teacher, and teacher of S.E.N. children. I am now retired but clearly nothing has changed - children on the spectrum are often misdiagnosed and rarely adequately provided for.

My brother who is 56 was diagnosed with Asbergers syndrome three years ago. We always knew he was 'different', but he also has a brain injury through an aneurism he suffered whilst working on his Masters at Loughborough University. Oddly, the Asbergers helps him to live with his brain injury as he copes by doing the same thing at the same time every day and only gets stressed when his routine is changed. There is not sufficient support in Durham County for sufferers of Autism, so i do hope that this petitipn gets enough signatures.

With all of the different levels of Autism, specialist help should be available within our community and schools.
