Exactly, the comment Eli posted perfectly describes my story with high numbers of people at tables and even numbers adhering to the current limit, so in my opinion, the limit should be pushed even lower, possibly to 4.

We used to be able to sit 5-6 people on EACH side of the table, now we have a maximum of 3 per side. This causes us to choose who are you closer with and better friends with.

As that friend, it's not like this rule is an end all, be all solution to the chaos, as my new table is still getting into trouble despite there being half the amount of people and I'm thinking of simply moving to an empty table
