Governor Kemp,
Floyd Medical Center has shown in the past and will continue to show in the future its support for the community and individuals it serves. I am asking that you approve Floyd's Open Heart CON so that all members of our community have affordable access to this service. This will give people a choice in our area and will level the playing field between Floyd and Redmond. Redmond has an advantage at this point because they were granted obstetric services.

There are grave consequences in transferring patients via ambulance from Floyd to Redmond when they are in need of a cardiothoracic surgeon. Patients have to be transported with a sheath in place, after having a heart cath when cardiac surgery is needed. Trauma patients need access quickly, not a ride in an ambulance, to a cardiac thoracic surgeon because of a life saving procedure. People in Floyd and surrounding counties deserve this crucial need in approval of heart surgery at Floyd Medical Center.

Our community needs a choice in open heart surgery. Redmond is the third highest charge facility in the state. African Americans have not had access to care, as death rates for African Americans are much higher that the State average. Floyd Medical Center is a community hospital and will work hard to reach out to African Americans.

Redmond has had every opportunity to do community outreach to the different ethnic groups in our service area, but has failed to make a difference in access to those in need.
