Moratorium on Hydroponic Organic Certification

There are probably constituents of healthy soil that help feed plants which we are not even aware yet. I would compare a healthy organic soil to breastfeeding, while hydroponic would be like an infant formula.

Good soil is the key to organics. Reject hydroponic vegetable production as certified organic.

As a consumer and grower of organic food for over 40 years I wholeheartedly support of an immediate moratorium on the certification of all soil-less growing operations. Furthermore, I would also not support the grandfathering of any soilless growing operation that has already been certified once a final rule has been approved.

Please preserve both the letter and the spirit of organic indoor and outdoor agriculture by allowing organic certification for soil-based systems ONLY.

At the core of organic production is sequestering carbon in the soil and enhancing soil fertility.

Organic certification of hydroponics would contradict and undermine the integrity of Organic Certification. It must be rejected.

I agree that hydroponics may not necessarily be "organic" due to the regulations behind that certification, but stating it's less nutritious or more dangerous is a joke. Indoor growing allows you to use NO pesticides. I've grown on organic farms before, and many OMRI listed pesticides will burn your hands and poison you. Also, hydroponics uses a fraction of water and fertilizer. It needs it's own certification, but it shouldn't be a battle between organic vs. hydroponic, it's a joke.
