Hydroponic techniques have no place in an organic growing system. The NOP is out of line with global thinking on organic production techniques and by allowing hydroponic and high input liquid feeding based production systems to be certified organic is an assault on the integrity of all those who practice organic techniques based in the soil. It is a hostile take over bid shrouded in misinformation and secrecy and cannot continue.

I want to know how my food is grown. And I want only food grown in soil. Hydroponic is not organic and not healthy.

The standards for organic produce must be meaningful standards. If it becomes easy for mechanistic big industry methods to be cast as ‘natural,’ something’s gone wrong and has to be corrected.

Hydroponics may be a perfectly fine way to grow food, but of course it is not organic, since organic agriculture is about care of the soil and hydroponics doesn't use soil. It isn't even agriculture -- no more than producing wood fiber in a laboratory could be called forestry. The fact that this has even come under consideration as a form of agriculture reflects an urban consumer perspective that the point of organic agriculture is to keep chemicals out of their food, rather than the stewardship of natural resources and rural communities.

I am the owner of an organic pasta company. I pursue with some sacrifices the certification because of the examples of the small farmers that have restarted to steward our land in the right way. Hydroponics is not part of this history and should not be included in the organic certification

We have lost far too much of our good topsoil in this country. True organic farming helps restore it. Keep organic in the soil!
